An Article recently appearing in the Greene Bay Gazette :

For every dollar invested in a school-age child, only 25 cents are invested in a preschool-aged child and only 6 cents are invested in an infant or toddler. Enhancement and prevention through quality early childhood development are more life- and cost-effective than attempting to intervene after problems, delays and crises occur.

Nieer works hard to keep policy makers and organizations informed. It often provides great information and editorials on specific Trends that are taking place throughout the country. This was just an excerpt from one of the articles. I think that continuing to keep quality education in the forefront is the premise within the organization. The articles are informative.

  1. Hi Millie,

I totally agree with Suzy Pfeifer, the author of the article you commented about, when she says that the early childhood education needs to be respected and supported, because of its long life importance, not only for individuals, but for the society in general.

I think that one is an article we all should read, and pass to families we work with, in order for them to realize the importance of early childhood, and to require policymakers to invest more in this educative field. I found the direct link to the article

  2. Millie,
The article posted on the nieer website reminded me of the statement made by Larry Schweinhart of High/Scope when he was analyzing the success of the High/Scope program "I've come to think that the primary value of [high/scope intervention] was that it improved the children's readiness for school so that when they entered school, they performed better; and, because they had more success, they got more committed to school; and because they got more committed to school, they had even greater success" (2006). Investing early has long lasting benefits!

  3. Suzanne,
I am out in the Hollows of Tennessee, we had a terrible storm last night, so unfortunately, I could not respond to this yesterday. So, after reading the article, The economic Benefits of high quality preschool program as well as information from NIEER, how does that make you feel? For me I feel incredible frustrating. It also causes me to ask myself and evaluate how can I make a difference? What can I do as well to get the message out. I know that our role and our direct work with children and families is so important... I just wish sometimes I could impact the field a little differently.... Help others to understand how imperative it is to provide quality services to young children and their families!

Thank-you, for sharing the article and the web site.

    Millie
