one of my favorite children's books.

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
I love this story book for many reasons.
One such reason is I became tickled watching the expressions on the children's faces as the story is read.
I love that by the third time that you are reading the story, the children are filling in the words.....
Annually within my classroom we would create the forrest that grew and grew. We would make a book for
Max to sail in..... We loved wearing our crowns and enjoyed swinging from our trees.

  1. Wow Millie .. What a wonderful way to make a story come to life for children. Are your trees life-sized so that the children have the concept of being in the trees?

  2. I love it! It is so nice to know that some of us are still bringing books to life! Can you imagine twenty years from now that a child's favorite book may be the Where the Wild Things are because his/her teacher cared enough to bring it to life....The simple joys of touching a life forever.

  3. Carolyn...
We painted sections of trees and then we put them together. They are often created with mixed media; cardboard paper, textured brushes..etc.. Then place them, within my reading area They stretch up into the sky. (ceiling). Since we could not actually swing on the trees, we would take a walk around the pond on the facility, there is a small forest, and we look up, and talk about how neat it would be to be max and to swing from trees.. We made a boat out of a large box, painted it and wrote Max's name on tit.

  5. I love this book too! I actually posted this as my favorite book also. I think this book is just great. It shows imagination of a little boy and you can just run wild with it. I love how you incorporate it into your classroom by building a jungle that grows and grows and making the sailboat. That is a very creative idea! Might have to try it one day!

  6. Brittany,
What is it about Max, and those Wild Things.... not sure you? I love Max's wolf suit, and his little rebellious side.
